O Lord, have compassion and mercy upon us, and make us worthy to listen to Thine Holy Gospel. A chapter from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew the evangelist, may his blessings be with us. Amen.

And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?

وفيما هو يتكلم إذ جاء يهوذا أحد الإثني عشر ومعه جمع كثير بسيوف وعصى من قبل رؤساء الكهنة وشيوخ الشعب، وكان مسلمه قد أعطاهم علامة قائلا: الذي أقبل فاه هو هو فأمسكوه. وللوقت تقدم إلى يسوع وقال له: السلام يا معلم. وقبل فاه. فقال له يسوع: يا صاحب، أهذا الذي جئت من أجله؟! حينئذ ألقوا أيديهم على يسوع وأمسكوه، وإذ واحد من الذين كانوا مع يسوع مد يده وإستل سيفه وضرب عبد رئيس الكهنة، فقطع أذنه اليمنى، حينئذ قال له يسوع: أردد السيف إلى مكانه، لأن كل الذين يأخذون بالسيف بالسيف يهلكون. أتظن أنى لا أستطيع الآن أن أطلب من أبي فيقدم لي في الحال ههنا أكثر من إثنتى عشرة جوقة من الملائكة، ولكن كيف تتم الكتب؟!. فإنه هكذا ينبغي أن يكون. وفي تلك الساعة قال يسوع للجموع: خرجتم كما تخرجون على لص بسيوف وعصى لتمسكوني، أما كنت أجلس كل يوم في الهيكل أعلم ولم تمسكوني؟! وهذا كله قد كان لتتم كتب الأنبياء. حينئذ تركه التلاميذ كلهم وهربوا، أما هم فأمسكوا يسوع وقدموه إلى قيافا رئيس الكهنة، حيث إجتمع الكتبة والشيوخ وكان بطرس يتبعهم من بعيد إلى دار رئيس الكهنة، ودخل وجلس مع الخدام لينظر النهاية.

In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
