134- The Manuscript of the Life of Saint Taklahimanout

After the Holy Liturgy, Brother Ballata accompanied me to the room that had the wanted manuscript, which is a manuscript about the life and miracles of Saint Taklehaimanot in the Ge’ez Language, the final agreement was to copy the images available at that ancient manuscript..  It was huge, and the monk got it out from the costly cloth it was wrapped with..  The pages were from animal leather, the writings in black, except the names in red..  The beginning of the chapters had nice decorations..  I started photographing those beautiful paintings, without any flash so not to hurt the pages or the colors..  The monk “Father Abba Welde Meten” started explaining the pictures and various parts to me, and when I told him details and names he got amazed, and I told him that I wished to copy the whole book, as what we have about Saint Taklehaimanot is “tennish” which means little..  He told me that the whole content of the book is published in one of the books that are being sold in the bookshops..  Then he showed me a chapter and told me, while Brother Ballata is translating for me from Amharic to English, that this chapter is not available in the printed book, and he allowed me to copy it..  I’ll ask Mr. Dessie the Ge’ez teacher to translate it for us..  The father blessed our persistence on our goal, then I left..

بعد القداس الإلهي صحبني الأخ بالاتا إلى الحجرة الموجود بها المخطوط المراد، وهو مخطوط عن قصة حياة ومعجزات الأنبا تكلا هيمانوت بلغة الجيز Geez، وكان آخر ما وصلنا إليه أن أقوم بتصوير الرسومات الموجودة في المخطوط الأثري..  وكان كتاباً ضخماً، تم إخراجه بعناية من القماش الثمين الملفوف به..  وكانت الصفحات من جلد حيوان، والكتابة بالأسود، عدا الأسماء باللون الأحمر..  ومقدمات الفصول بها زخارف جميلة..  وبدأت في تصوير الرسومات الرائعة، بدون فلاش بالطبع حتى لا تؤذي الصفحات والألوان..  وكان الراهب "أبونا ولد متن" يشرح لي بعض الصور والفقرات، ويندهش عندما أخبره بالتفاصيل والأسماء، وأخبره أني كنت أبغي تصوير كل الكتاب، لأن ما عندنا عن القديس الأنبا تكلا هيمانوت "تينِّش" أي قليل..  فأخبرني بأن كل محتوى هذا الكتاب مطبوع في أحد الكتب التي تباع حالياً..  ثم أراني فصلاً من الكتاب وقال لي -والأخ بالاتا يترجم لي من الأمهرية إلى الإنجليزية- أن هذا الفصل غير موجود في الكتب المطبوعة، وسمح لي بتصويره..  سوف أطلب من أ. ديسّي مدرس لغة الجيز ترجمته لنا..  وباَرَك الأب إصرارنا على الهدف، ثم انصرفت..
