Jesus was traveling from Judea back to Galilee and decided to go through the region of Samaria where the Samaritan people lived. The Samaritans were a race of Jews that had in the past inter-married with other races. The Jews did not allow Samaritans to worship with them or have anything to do with them. Jews normally avoided traveling through Samaria.
