191- A lesson by the hard way

 درس بالطريق الصعب

One of the young men ran after me telling me to wait..  I stopped, the men and the translator got out, then one of the monks came asking me to wait, then he got inside to talk it through with the other monk, then he got out asking me if I took any photos for the Monastery from the outside, I told them that I cared more for the icons and the interior design, in addition to the outer structure..  But when they refused to let me do it in the Monastery, and got me out, I respected their wish and didn’t take a single shot..  He went inside again, and came asking me, what about when I went to the Monastery yesterday, I retold him that I didn’t even climb that other mountain, but I got there after 5.30, and I slept under a tree until the morning..

ثم جرى ورائي أحد الشباب يقول لي: "انتظر"..  فوقفت، وخرج الشباب والمترجم، ثم خرج راهباً يطلب مني الانتظار، ثم دخل يتشاور مع الراهب الآخر، ثم خرج يسألني هل أخذت صور للدير من الخارج، فأخبرته أنني أهتم في الأساس بالأيقونات والتصميم الداخلي، بالإضافة إلى العمارة الخارجية..  ولكن عندما رفضوا السماح لي بالأمر في الدير، وأخرجوني خارجاً، احترمت رغبتهم ولم أقم بأخذ ولا صورة واحدة..  فدخل مرة أخرى وخرج ليسألني، وماذا عن الأمس عندما ذهبت للدير، فأعدت إخباره أنني لم أصعد الجبل الآخر من الأساس، بل وصلت بعد الخامسة والنصف، وقمت بالمبيت تحت شجرة حتى الصباح..

After talking for a third time with the other monk, while I was staying outside and not wanting to enter, he got out telling me that they were ready to give me any information about the Monastery, but not to take any photos or going there..  I told him that I could easily get information from anyone or from books..  But photos had a greater value in reaching faster than mere data..  The data accompanies..  Finally, he told me that he was going to the Monastery the following Saturday (after four days), and to come at that time to the Monastery, and all would be done in his presence.. I thanked him, the others, and left..

وبعد تشاور مرة ثالثة مع الراهب، ولم أشأ دخول المبنى وانتظرت خارجاً، خرج الراهب يقول لي أنهم على استعداد لإعطائي أي معلومات عن الدير، ولكن ليس بالتصوير ولا الذهاب..  فقلت له أن المعلومات أستطيع الحصول عليها من أي شخص أو من الكتب..  ولكن الصورة لها قيمة كبيرة في الوصول بصورة أسرع من مجرد بيانات..  المعلومات تكون مصاحبة لها..  فقال لي أخيراً أنه سوف يذهب إلى الدير يوم السبت (بعد أربعة أيام)، وأن آتي في ذلك الوقت إلى الدير، وسوف يتم الأمر في حضوره..  فشكرته وشكرت المحيطين، وخرجت خارجاً..

On the way, the translator asked me: ‘Are you satisfied now?!’  Of course I was, at least that was some kind of Upper reconciliation after what had happened that day, as I was so sad from all what had happened..  But I told him: “The hard thing is not to be allowed to enter the Church..  It is the House of God, and the house of monks, or even Patriarchs!”

وفي الطريق سألني المترجم..  هل أنت راضٍ الآن؟!  كنت بالطبع راضياً، فعلى الأقل كان هذا نوع من المصالحة العُليا بسبب ما حدث في ذلك اليوم، حيث كنت متضايقاً جداً من كل تلك المواقف..  ولكنني قلت له: الأمر الصعب هو ألا يتم السماح لك بدخول الكنيسة..  فهذا بيت الله وليس بيت لا رهبان ولا بطاركة حتى!

Thank God for everything..  Of course there are lots of lessons from that day, ended by a lesson in humbleness!

الحمد لله على كل حال..  بالتأكيد هناك العديد من الدروس من هذا اليوم، انتهت بدرس في التواضع!

I don’t know if I am staying longer in Gondar to go back to the Monastery or not..  But at least the matter was settled in my mind, and the torment was cast away..

لا أعرف إن كنت سأقضي في جوندر فترة طويلة حتى أذهب مرة أخرى للدير أم لا..  ولكن على الأقل تم حَل هذا الأمر في داخلي، وتم إقصاء الغصة بعيداً..

# Update: When I went back to Addis Ababa, Mr. Daniel from the Ethiopian Patriarchate told me that a foreigner and an Ethiopian man went to that monastery before I go with a couple of weeks, and they tried to steal an ancient manuscript..!  No comment!

# تحديث: عندما عدت إلى أديس أبابا، أخبرني أ. دانيال من البطريركية الحبشية أن أحد الأجانب مع شخص حبشي ذهبوا لهذا الدير منذ بضعة أسابيع، وحاولوا سرقة أحد المخطوطات الأثرية..!  دون تعليق!
