158- Lake Tana Monasteries

 أديرة بحيرة تانا

We arrived at the first one after one hour of sailing in Lake Tana.  Which was Saint Betra Mariam Monastery, and beside it was St. George Monastery (Mehal Zege Gorgis).  All the Churches that I’ve seen, and many of the Ethiopian Churches are built as the shape of a circle.  You see the fresco icons in it cover the whole walls in a very beautiful way..  The ceiling at the first Monastery was decorated by drawings of angels..

وصلنا إلى الدير الأول بعد ساعة من الإبحار في بحيرة تانا.  وهو دير القديس بيترا مريم، وبجواره دير القديس مارجرجس (ميهال زيجي جورجيس).  كل الكنائس التي رأيتها، وكثير من الكنائس الحبشية مبنية على شكل دائرة.  وترى الأيقونات الفريسكو فيها تغطي كل الحائط بصورة جميلة جداً..  وكان السقف في الدير الأول مزيناً برسومات الملائكة..

The permissions that we took from the Diocese Office for each Monastery was replaced by a general one for all the Holy places as we asked..  And it was so helpful at that day, and photographed hundreds of Ethiopian icons at some of Lake Tana Monasteries.  I noticed lots of resemblance between the icons from one place to another..  Seems that the new place copies icons from the older place as an exact copy..  The icons has nice stories, from the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible, Church history, and also at some icons you can see pictures of laymen like kings, princes and even the original painter of the icon..!

تم تغيير التصريح الذي بدأ مكتب الإيبارشية في عمله لكل دير، إلى تصريح واحد عام لكل الأماكن المقدسة بالإيبارشية لتسهيل الأمر كما طلبنا..  ونشكر الله أنه كان نافعاً جداً في هذا اليوم، فقمنا بتصوير مئات الأيقونات الحبشية في بعض أديرة بحيرة تانا.  ولاحظت كثير من التشابه ما بين بعض الأيقونات من مكان لآخر..  ويبدو أن المكان الجديد يقوم بنقل أيقونات سابقة عليه كنسخة طبق الأصل..  الأيقونات بها قصص جميلة، من الكتاب المقدس بعهديه القديم والحديث، وقصص من تاريخ الكنيسة، وأيضاً يوجد بعض الصور التي يُرسَم في جانبيها بعض العلمانيين من ملوك وأمراء، أو حتى الرسام الأصلي للصورة..!

It is to be noted that the iconography of the Ethiopian church is very expressive; you can see many pictures of various moments of torturing saints, moments of martyrdom, depicting devils in hell, etc..  I don’t think it is suitable to be put them all on the site..

من المُلاحَظ أيضاً أن فن الأيقنة في الكنيسة الحبشية قوي التعبير؛ فهناك صور كثيرة للقطات التعذيب المختلفة للقديسين، أو لحظات الاستشهاد، أو صور الشياطين في الجحيم أو غيره..  لا أظن أنه من المناسب وضعها جميعها على الموقع..
