1- The start & the Journey to Ethiopia

The idea of going to Ethiopia came to us nearly in the year 2000.  I said jokingly to myself: "We are a Church named after an Ethiopian Saint..  Why doesn’t our Church arrange journeys to Ethiopia?!  And how come we draw information and pictures about St. Tekla Haimanot from sources other than ourselves?!  Why not go to Ethiopia itself to get these data..?"

بدأت فكرة ذهابنا إلى إثيوبيا حوالي عام 2000، فقلت لنفسي ضاحكاً: "نحن كنيسة مُسمّاة باسم قديس أثيوبي..  لماذا لا تنظم الكنيسة رحلات إلى إثيوبيا؟!  وكيف نستقى معلومات وصور عن الأنبا تكلا هيمانوت من مصادر أخرى غيرنا؟!  لماذا لا نذهب إلى إثيوبيا نفسها للحصول على تلك البيانات..؟"

Lately I was on a business, tourism and service trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, and there I got to know His Grace Bishop Antonius Markos, Coptic Bishop of Africa Affairs..  There I learned about the visit of His Holiness Pope Shenouda III to Ethiopia, and that Bishop A. Markos is one of the Coptic delegation to attend the Papal visit.  So I thought that there won’t be a better time go to Ethiopia, to record this historical visit regarding the reconciliation between the Coptic Orthodox Church and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church..

كنت مؤخراً في رحلة عمل وسياحة وخدمة في جوهانزبرج في جنوب أفريقيا، وتعرفت خلالها على نيافة الحبر الجليل الأنبا أنطونيوس مرقس أسقف شئون أفريقيا..  وعلمت بزيارة قداسة البابا شنوده الثالث إلى إثيوبيا، وسيكون الأنبا أنطونيوس من ضمن الوفد القبطي المصاحب للزيارة البابوية.  ففكرت أنه ليس وقت أفضل من هذا للذهاب إلى إثيوبيا لتأريخ هذه الزيارة التاريخية في مسار إرجاع العلاقات بين الكنيسة القبطية الأرثوذكسية والكنيسة الحبشية..

I came back earlier from Johannesburg so I could get the Ethiopian Visa and travel to Ethiopia before H. H. Pope Shenoda gets there.  So I applied for the Visa on Monday April 7, 2008, got it the next day, and booked the flight on the Ethiopian Airlines for Wednesday April 9 at 2:30 pm, to reach Addis Ababa at 8:40 pm.

 

وعدت من جوهانزبرج مبكراً حتى أستطيع الحصول على فيزا إثيوبيا والسفر قبل وصول قداسة البابا شنوده.  فقدمت عليها يوم الإثنين 7 إبريل 2008، وحصلت عليها اليوم التالي، وحجزت الطائرة على خطوط الطيران الإثيوبية Ethiopian. وذلك يوم الأربعاء 9 إبريل الساعة الثانية والنصف ظهراً، لنصل أديس أبابا الساعة التاسعة إلا الثلث مساء.

So I packed up my luggage in a hurry, and woke up at the dawn of 9 April to catch the bus going from Alex. to Cairo, to get to the Airport at about 12:00 noon.  After we reached Cairo International Airport, I delivered my luggage and started using the laptop to type these words..  About 12:30, I found His Grace Bishop Bishoy with His Grace Bishop Botrous at the Airport hall, heading for the VIP waiting hall.  I didn’t want to intrude, so I left them on their way, and to my surprise, I discovered later that they would be traveling on the same plane as me!  This was such a relief, especially because those who will wait for me at the airport, Mr. Loutfy Bebawi and Mrs. Nadia, who are Egyptians living in Ethiopia, are the same people who will receive the Bishops at the VIP hall at Addis Ababa Airport.

وجهزت الحقيبة على عجل واستيقظت في السادسة فجر 9 إبريل للحاق بأتوبيس يذهب من الإسكندرية إلى القاهرة ويصل هناك الساعة الثانية عشرة ظهراً، وبعد وصوله إلى مطار القاهرة الدولي، قمت بتسليم الحقائب، وبدأت في استخدام اللاب توب للبدء في كتابة هذه الكلمات..  وحوالي الساعة الثانية عشر والنصف، فوجئت بنيافة الحبر الجليل الأنبا بيشوي مع نيافة الحبر الجليل الأنبا بطرس في صالة المطار، متوجهين إلى قاعة انتظار كبار الزوار.  ولم أشأ التطفل عليهم، فتركتهم في طريقهم، لأُفاجأ عند دخولي العربة التي تنقلنا إلى الطائرة، بوجود الآباء الأساقفة معنا على نفس الطائرة!  وكان هذا أمراً مريحاً جداً، وخاصة لأن الذين سيقومون باستقبالي في المطار، وهم أ. لطفي بيباوي ومدام نادية من المصريين المقيمين في إثيوبيا، هم نفسهم مَنْ سيقومون باستقبال الآباء الأساقفة المبجلين في قاعة كبار الزوار بمطار أديس أبابا.
