To know the detail history of this Monastery, one has to be briefed about Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s history, of which this Monastery is part and parcel.
لنعرف تاريخ الدير بالتفصيل، ينبغي أن نتعرف أولاً على الكنيسة الحبشية الأرثوذكسية، فهذا الدير جزءاً منها.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church is one of the oldest churches in the world. The bases of its faith is the teaching of the Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ and that of the 318 Fathers of the Church.
الكنيسة الإثيوبية الأرثوذكسية التوحيدية هي إحدى أقدم الكنائس في العالم. أساس الإيمان فيها هو تعاليم الآباء الرسل عن ربنا يسوع المسيح، وتعاليم الآباء الـ318 .

This Monastery is named after the name of a monk called Abba Lebanos, who lived in the sixth century A. D.
هذا الدير سُمي باسم راهب اسمه "الأنبا ليبانوس"، وقد عاش في القرن السادس بعد الميلاد.
The word Debre is a Geez word, which means “mountain”. Since all Monasteries in Ethiopia are built in mountainous areas, apart from those in towns and cities. So, the name Debre is given to all Monasteries.
كلمة "ديبرا" هي كلمة بلغة الجيز، وتعني "جبل". حيث أن كل الأديرة في إثيوبيا مبنية في مناطق جبلية، بعيداً عن جبال القرى والمدن. لذا، فإن كل الأديرة هنا تبدأ بكلمة "ديبرا".
In the 6th century a. d., the aforementioned Father Abba Libanos came to this area, and built a cave in the foot of a gorge at a place called “Asbo”. There He prayed for 40 years.
في القرن السادس الميلادي، القديس أبا ليبانوس السابق الذكر جاء إلى هذه المنطقة، وقام بحفر مغارة على سفح الجبل في مكان يُدعى "أسبو". وقضى هنا أربعين عاماً في الصلاة ..
After that He was told by Archangel Gabriel to leave the area, since it is assigned to a Father who is chosen by God from his childhood. The Father was Tekle Haymanot. Angel Gabrial also told Abba Libanous that the place will be named after him as “Debre Linabos”. Then this monk went back to His place of birth, “Tigray”.
بعد هذا ظهر له الملاك جبرائيل يخبره بترك هذه المنطقة، حيث أنها مُعينة لأب قديس مُختار من الله منذ طفولته. هذا الأب هو القديس تكلاهيمانوت. رئيس الملائكة جبرائيل قال أيضاً للأنبا ليبانوس أن هذا المكان سوف يُسمى على اسمه "ديبرا ليبانوس". فذهب الراهب القديس إلى مكان ولادته وهو "تيجراي".

Our visit to Debre Libanos زيارتنا لدير ديبرا ليبانوس
From the 6th century to the 10th century the disciples of Abba Libanos kept the Monastery, and preached Christianity among the pagans in the area.
وبدءاً من القرن السادس وحتى القرن العاشر، حفظ تلاميذ القديس ليبانوس الدير، وقاموا بالتبشير بالمسيحية وسط القبائل الوثنية في المنطقة.
Later in the 10th century, a bandit called “Kora” killed the monks, and taken the place till his death! After the death of this evil man, the area remained under the control of the pagans for the next 200 years.
ولكن في القرن العاشر، قام أحد اللصوص، واسمه "كورا" بقتل الرهبان الموجودين، واحتل المكان حتى موته! وبعدما مات هذا الشرير، ظلت المنطقة تحت تحكم الوثنيين لمدة الـ200 سنة التالية.
