50) Easter Breakfast with an Ethiopian Family

Yesterday I went to Saint Yared Church, at the back of the place I’m staying in, at the Lancia area on the way for Sares..  I attended part of the prayers of the Holy Easter..  But I couldn’t stay longer unfortunately, because prayers end after 3.00 in the morning, and I didn’t want to be away from the house late..  As mainly the streets here are without street-lights, and electric cuts can happen at any time..

ذهبت بالأمس إلى كنيسة القديس يارد، وهي خلف المنزل الذي أقطن به حالياً في منطقة لانشا في طريق ساريس..  وحضرت جانباً من صلاة عيد القيامة المجيد..  ولكنني لم أكمل كل الصلاة للأسف، حيث تنتهي بعد الثالثة فجراً، نظراً لأنني لم أرد أن أكون خارج المنزل في وقت متأخر من الليل..  لأنه هنا غالباً ما تجد الشوارع بدون إنارة، بالإضافة إلى أنه قد يتم قطع التيار الكهربائي في أي وقت..

 

 

In the morning I woke up late by the knocks of one of the family members, owners of the villa I rented a room in it for a month, and he offered thankfully that I join them..  I declined thanking him, then he told me: “Do you wanna see the ceremony?”, I got excited and asked: “Do you make a ceremony on Easter morning?”, he replied eagerly: “Coffee ceremony”!  I accepted and thanked him, although I don’t drink coffee nor tea..

وفي الصباح استيقظت متأخراً على طرقات أحد أفراد العائلة الحبشية أصحاب الفيلا التي قمت بتأجير حجرة في منزلهم لمدة شهر، وعرض علي مشكوراً أن أنضم إليهم..  فتمنعت قليلاً، ثم أخبرني: "هل تريد أن تشاهد الاحتفال؟"، فتحمست جداً وسألته: "هل تقومون بعمل احتفال صباح العيد؟"، فقال لي بحرارة: "إنه حفل قهوة"!  فقبلت الدعوة شاكراً، على الرغم من أني لا أشرب القهوة ولا الشاي..

Here the Coffee industry is the biggest national industry, and they export it all over the world..  About 80% of the population work in the agriculture field..  I got into the house to see the mother, sitting at a corner of the house, in front of her a pot, where she was roasting coffee herself on fire, and the beautiful scent of coffee fills the house..  At the table they put the coffee cups upside down on their special plates..  Along with a pot of fresh milk, and anther for sugar..  It took about one hour, during which they poured a glass of the famous “Tudge”, which is an Ethiopian drink, made of bee honey and water fermented in a special way..  It had a nice flavor, orange in colour..  I sipped from it a bit..

هنا صناعة البن هي أكبر صناعة تدر عائد قومي في إثيوبيا، ويتم تصديره للعالم..  وحوالي 80% من السكان يعملون في الزراعة عامة..  ودخلت المنزل لأرى الأم وهي جالسة في ركن من المنزل، وأمامها إناء تقوم بتحميص البن بنفسها على النار، ورائحة البن الجميلة تملأ أركان المنزل..  وعلى المنضدة تم رَص فناجين القهوة مقلوبة على الأطباق الخاصة بها..  ويوجد إناء به لبن طازج، وآخر للسكر..  واستمر الأمر حوالي الساعة، خلالها تم صَب لي كوب من مشروب "التادج" الشهير في إثيوبيا، وهو عبارة عن عسل أبيض وماء مخمرين بطريقة ما..  وهو مشروب مقبول الطعم، وهو مشروب قومي حبشي..  لونه قريب من عصير البرتقال..  رشفت منه بضعة رشفات..

 

 

Then they poured a cup of coffee to me, with milk, it had a very nice taste.. They call it here “Bunna”, close to the Arabic, and they say that the coffee started here in Ethiopia, in an area called “Cafa”, where the name is derived from in English..  The Coffee festival was about making the coffee in a special immediate way from A to Z, and pouring three cups of coffee, one after the other..

بعد هذا تم صب فنجان من القهوة لي، وكان قهوة باللبن، طعمها جميل جداً..  والبن يطلق عليه بالأمهرية "بونّا" مثل اللغة العربية، والقهوة يقولون أن بدايتها كانت في إثيوبيا، في منطقة اسمها "كافا"، والاسم اشتُقَّ منه كلمة "كوفي" coffee الإنجليزية..  وكان احتفال القهوة عبارة عن عمل القهوة بطريقة خاصة فورية من الألف إلى الياء، وصب ثلاثة فناجين من القهوة لكل شخص..  كلما ينتهي من واحد يأخذ الثاني..

Then the father cut some nice bread “Dabo”..  “Anjera” was served, same one I ate at Saint Takla Haymanout’s Monastery (Debre Libanos)..  The Anjera was spread on the plate, and inside they put some meat-based foods, and I like the “Anetsha” very much, which is lamb meat, baked with little tomato sauce, butter, onion, and garlic..  I took the full ingredients to spread this in Egypt :)  In general, I noticed that the way Ethiopians prepare food is very delicious, and they use lots of spices and herbs, it gives new flavors to food, and a delicious taste..  mmm!

بعد هذا قام الأب بتقطيع نوع من الخبز "دابو"، وطعمه جميل..  ثم تم توزيع قطع خبز "الأنجيرا"، والذي أكلت منه سابقاً في مضيفة دير الأنبا تكلا هيمانوت ديبرا ليبانوس..  وتم فَرش الخبز على الطبق، ثم تم توزيع بضعة أنواع من المأكولات المكونة أساساً من اللحوم، وأعجبني كثيراً وجبة  "أنيتشا"، وهي عبارة عن لحم خروف بالبصل والثوم والطماطم والزبدة..  وأخذت طريقة عملها، لأقوم بنشرها في مصر :)  وعموماً، لاحظت أن طريقة عمل الأطعمة الحبشية شهية جداً، واستخدام التوابل والنباتات المختلفة كثير، ويعطي نكهات جديدة للطعام، وطعم شهي..  ممم!

There were also some kind of hot sauce, as usual as all Ethiopian foods, full with pepper and chili..  which are like salt! A must..  And the funny thing is that they call the garlic: “white onion”..

وكان هناك أيضاً نوع من الصلصات الحارة، وهنا تقريباً جميع الأطعمة حارة، ومليئة بالشطة والفلفل..  وهو شيء أساسي كالملح مثلاً!  ومن الطريف أنهم يطلقون على الثوم اسم "البصل الأبيض"..
