49) Holy Week in Ethiopia

 أسبوع الآلام في اثيوبيا

During the Holy Week I visited a couple of Ethiopian Churches, and yesterday I attended part of the Big Friday at St. Ragoel Church in “Markato” district in Addis Ababa, and at St. Maryam Church in “Arat Kilo”..  There were thousands of people inside the church and around it..  And those outside got some papers from newspapers or a piece of cloth to spread on the street floor when they do the Holy Friday prostrations..  In the Coptic Orthodox Church we do 400 prostrations at that day, hundred in each direction..  Here they do prostrations too, but many people add more, and you see them starting this kind of worship till about 5.00 p. m. that day..

خلال أسبوع الآلام قمت بزيارة بضعة كنائس حبشية، وأمس حضرت جانباً من صلاة يوم الجمعة العظيمة في كنيسة القديس راجوئيل في حي "ماركاتو" في أديس أبابا، وكنيسة القديسة مريم في حي "آرات كيلو"..  وكان هناك آلاف من الشعب داخل الكنيسة وفي حدودها وحولها..  ومَنْ هم في الخارج أحضروا ورقة من ورق الجرائد أو قطعة من القماش ليفرشوها على الأرض حينما يقوموا بالسجدات..  في الكنيسة القبطية نقوم بعمل 400 ميطانية (سجدة) يوم الجمعة الكبيرة، مائة مطانية في كل اتجاه من الاتجاهات الأربعة..  هنا يقومون بعمل مئات الميطانيات أيضاً، ولكن كثيرون يزيدون عليهم وتراهم يبدأون من السجود حتى الساعة الخامسة بعد الظهر تقريباً..

 

 

At the end of the prayer yesterday at one of the Habeshy churches, they were using huge drums (you’ll find some of them at the Ethiopian museums’ section here at St. Takla’s website), while they were clapping their hands in a passionate way, and singing their beautiful holy passion hymns..  It was a great chance to be able to attend part of the Holy Pashca Week in the Ethiopian Church..

في ختام الصلاة أمس في الكنيسة الحبشية، كانوا يستخدمون الطبول الكبيرة (وستجد بعضاً منها في قسم متاحف إثيوبيا هنا بموقع الأنبا تكلا هيمانوت)، وهم يصفقون بحرارة ويرتلون بألحان الآلام الجميلة لديهم..  وكانت فرصة رائعة أن نقوم بحضور جانب من صلاة أسبوع البصخة في الكنيسة الإثيوبية..

Today morning, I went to the Natural History Museum (Zoology Museum) at Addis Ababa University, it had a section for various insects, marine life, embalmed amphibians, special section for birds, and another for animals..  Also it had some ancient human skulls, an elephant skull and a big crocodile..

اليوم صباحاً ذهبت إلى متحف للتاريخ الطبيعي في جامعة بأديس أبابا، وكان به قسم للحشرات المختلفة - كائنات بحرية – برمائيات مُحنطة – قسم خاص للطيور – قسم آخر للحيوانات المختلفة..  وأيضاً كان به بعض الجماجم البشرية القديمة جداً، وجمجمة فيل، وتمساح ضخم مُحنَّط..

When I went to the Patriarchate to take permissions to take photos and collect data from the Ethiopian Patriarchate, which was in the Amharic Language, I asked some Ethiopian friends to translate it to me, and I found out that the permission for the district of “Lalibella” is missing, and it is an important part of the tour, which has some fabulous and unique rock churches..  Without too much details, getting this paper was delayed due to the time of Covenant Thursday till Easter Sunday, and I’ll call the Patriarchate next Monday to see if the permission had been finished or what..  Because of this, I won’t be able to book for the internal flights, or confirm with the Travel Agency till I get this paper..  All for good..

عندما أخذت تصاريح التصوير وتجميع بيانات من البطريركية الحبشية، وكانت باللغة الأمهرية، طلبت من بعض الأصدقاء الأحباش ترجمتها، واكتشفت عدم وجود تصريح لمنطقة "لاليبيلا"، وهي جزء هام من الرحلة التي سأقوم بها، وبها بعض الكنائس الصخرية الرائعة والفريدة..  وبدون الدخول في تفاصيل، تعطَّل الحصول على هذا التصريح بسبب فترة خميس العهد حتى أحد القيامة، وسأقوم بالاتصال بالبطريركية يوم الإثنين لمعرفة هل تم تجهيز هذا التصريح أم ليس بعد..  بسبب هذا الأمر، لن أستطيع القيام بحجز الطيران الداخلي وتأكيد حجز شركة السياحة حتى أقوم بالحصول على هذا التصريح..  كله للخير..

I’ll try to make good use of this time to get to know Addis Ababa better, and go to new places, with a better chance to work more at Saint Takla Haymanout’s website, and update this section regarding our visit to Ethiopia..

سأحاول الاستفادة من هذه الفترة في التعرف أكثر على أديس أبابا والذهاب إلى أماكن جديدة، مع وجود فرصة أفضل للعمل في موقع الأنبا تكلا هيمانوت وتحديث القسم الخاص برحلتنا إلى إثيوبيا..

Thank God I’ve started to get use to the weather here, and the health issues is no longer a big deal, this will help us to start our tour to the Holy places of Ethiopia next week in a better way..

أحمد الله أنني بدأت أتأقلم على الجو هنا، وبدأت الحالة الصحية في التحسُّن، وهذا سيساعدنا على بداية الرحلة للأماكن المقدسة في إثيوبيا الأسبوع القادم بصورة أفضل..
