269) Follow the herd

 اتبع القطيع

I kept walking forward..  Three hours..  The water I had was finished..  It was after five!  There was nothing or no places around me but vast agricultural lands, farm animals grazing here and there..  I was not ready to spend another night in the wilderness..  And I couldn’t get any rest all the way, fearing that the darkness would come soon..  I found one of the farmers with some Bulls plowing with them the land..  I asked him about the way, he didn’t understand me, then I drew on the ground a road, and told him I want to go back to Addis Ababa..  He told me: “Asphalt”?!  I said yes..  Asphalt..  (The funny thing is that in Arabic we use the same word, but I didn’t know it was used also in Amharic)..  He pointed also to the right..  Then one of his relatives (Zamat) passed by, and pointed to the same place!!  There were some trees far away..  I thanked them and started going there, feeling that all I am doing is just turning back!!  Half an hour..  One hour..  After I reached there I found nothing..  Found other people..  They pointed to the same direction!!  I headed further, found nothing..  All that was walking in muddy land, with grass, thorns, rocks..  Up and down.. Along with crossing rivers..

فاستمريت في المسير إلى الأمام..  ثلاثة ساعات..  وانتهت المياه التي معي..  وكانت الساعة بعد الخامسة!  ولا يوجد أي شيء أو أي مكان حولي سوى أراضي زراعية شاسعة، وحيوانات ترعى من مكان لآخر..  ولم أكن على استعداد لقضاء ليلة أخرى في العراء..  ولم أستطع أن ارتاح طوال الطريق خوفاً من أن يحل الظلام..  ثم وجدت أحد المزارعين مع بعض الثيران يحرث بهم الأرض..  فسألته عن الطريق، ولم يفهمني، فقمت بالرسم على الأرض طريق، وأخبرته أنني أريد العودة إلى أديس أبابا..  فقال لي: "أسفلت"؟!  فقلت له نعم..  أسفلت..  (الطريف أننا في العربية نستخدم نفس الكلمة، ولكني لم أعلم أنها تستخدم بالأمهرية كذلك).. فأشار إلى اليمين كذلك..  ثم أتى أحد أقاربه (زَمَت)، وأشار إلى نفس المكان!!  وكانت بعض الأشجار من بعيد..  فشكرتهم وبدأت أتوجه إلى هناك، شاعراً أنني أعود للخلف!!  نصف ساعة..  ساعة..  وبعد وصولي لذلك المكان لم أجد شيئاً..  ووجدت أشخاص آخرين..  فأشاروا في نفس الوجهة!!  فتوجهت إلى ما بعدها، ولم أجد شيئاً..  كل هذا في أراضي طينية بعضها حشائش وبعضها أشواك وبعضها أحجار..  ما بين صعود وهبوط وعبور أنهار.. 

 

The time then was 5:07, and I left the monastery at 1:51 pm ! !الساعة حينئذ كانت الخامسة و سبع دقائق بعد الظعر، وقد تركت الدير الساعة الثانية إلا عشر دقائق   And still I couldn't find the way back! !وحتى الآن لم أتبين طريق العودة   Then I met a shepherded, and he told me to follow him and he'll show me..  So I followed the herd! !ثم قابلت رجلا راعي غنم، وأخبرني بأن أتبعه ليريني الطريق..  فتبعت القافلة   Then he left and I met others who pointed at the same direction ثم تركني و تقابلت مع آخرين يخبروني عن نفس الجهة   But it wasn't the same place I came from! !ولكنه لم يكن نفس الطريق الذي أتيت منه
